Lost Merle Haggard Recording Featured On New “Bakersfield Sound” Box Set

A lost early Merle Haggard recording is featured in the upcoming box set “The Bakersfield Sound 1940-1970,” which is set to drop August 9th, and fans are now getting to hear it for the first time. The track is a recording of “I'm Gonna Break Every Heart I Can,” which Merle did for the independent Tally Records label, his label before signing with Capitol.

“I'd heard he'd recorded it for Tally, but nobody ever heard it and it was assumed it was lost," box set producer Scott Bomar tells “Billboard, noting it was found in a tape box someone gave him that was labeled “Merle.” “It turned out to be the original version of that song, which is quite a bit different than the Capitol version he recorded a few years later." He adds, "It was a real find, quite a nice historical glimpse into that moment in the studio.”
