Dan + Shay Were The Big Country Winners At The AMAs

The 2020 American Music Awards went down last night in Los Angeles with Dan + Shay the big country winners, taking home three awards, Favorite Country Duo or Group, and Favorite Country Song and Collaboration of The Year for “10,000 Hours,” featuring Justin Bieber.

The night’s other country winners included Kane Brown, Favorite Male, Maren Morris, Favorite Female, and Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country: Fully Loaded” for Favorite Album.

  • Country-turned pop star Taylor Swift was also a big winner last night, nabbing Artist of the Year. During her speech she confirmed to fans that she wasn’t there because she was re-recording all her old music in the studio where she originally recorded the albums, noting “it’s been amazing and I can’t wait for you to hear it.”
  • Taylor also won two other awards, Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock and Favorite Music Video for “cardigan,” extending her current record of the most AMA wins of all time to 31.  Click here for a complete winners list.
  • As or the show itself, Taraji P. Henson opened the ceremony with a number that had her dancing and shaking her booty to Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage,” Cardi B’s “WAP” and more, and then used her speech to urge folks to come together, noting, “ we need to heal. We need to love on each other a little more.” Unlike some other shows, the AMAs did have an audience, although they were all the way up in the balcony, and consisted of groups of families, all wearing masks, and sitting socially distanced, with Taraji noting that everyone got tested prior to the show.

Of course the AMAs were jam-packed with performances with some of you’re favorite stars taking the stage. Among them:

  • The show kicked off with a world premiere performance featuring Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber. It started with Justin sitting in front of a mirror and performing “Lonely,” which was followed by “Holy,” featuring a large troupe of face-mask wearing dancers. It then ended with Shawn on guitar joining Justin for their newly released collaboration “Monster.”
  • But that wasn’t the only taste of Shawn we got. He later returned for a soaring performance of “Wonder," that started on a living room set, and ended with him on stage and backed by his band.
  • New mom Katy Perry returned to the AMAs for the first time in seven years, teaming with Darius Rucker for a reimagined performance of the track “Only Love.” On social media she shared that the performance was “for my father.”
  • The Weeknd took to the streets of Los Angeles for his performance, which featured his face and head all wrapped up in bandages and pyro and fireworks going off all around him. He teamed with Kenny G for their song, "In Your Eyes” and also performed the world television debut of "Save Your Tears."
  • Meghan Thee Stallion performed the world premiere live performance of “Body,” proving that she certainly knows how to move hers.
  • Billie Eilish was bathed in red light for her first live performance of her new single “Therefore I Am.”
  • Nelly celebrated the 20th anniversary of “Country Grammar,” with a medley of hits including “E.I.,” “Ride Wit Me,” and the title track.
  • Jennifer Lopez and Maluma brought the heat for a performance of "Pa' Ti" and "Lonely,” with J.Lo wearing a sexy unitard that strategically covered all her naughty bits.
  • Bell Biv Devoe, who first appeared on the AMAs in 1991, celebrated the 30th anniversary of “Poison,” with a performance of “Poison” and “Do Me.”
  • Dan + Shay performed their latest single “I Should Probably Go To Bed” from the middle of the empty audience, and backed by a string section.
  • BTS, from South Korea, wrapped the show with a performance of “Life Goes On” and “Dynamite,” with the guys standing alone in what looked like an empty arena illuminated to make it look like fans were in the audience.
  • Other performances included: Lewis Capaldi performed “Before You Go,” Dua Lipa showed off her moves for her performance of “Levitating” from London; 24KGoldn and iann dior performed their number one single “Mood;” Lil Baby bared his soul to a therapist in his performance of “Emotionally Scarred;" Bebe Rexa and Doja Cat performed “Baby I’m Jealous” on a dessert setting and Machine Gun Kelly performed “Bloody Valentine” and “My Ex’s Best Friend,” with Travis Barker, with the performance getting an intro from MGK’s girlfriend Megan Fox.

The 2020 American Music Awards went down last night in Los Angeles with Taylor Swift winning the night’s biggest award, Artist of the Year.  Taylor also won two other awards, Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock and Favorite Music Video for “cardigan,” extending her current record of the most AMA wins of all time to 31.

The night’s other big winner was The Weekend, who took home three awards, winning Favorite Male Artist – Soul/R&B, as well as Favorite Album – Soul/R&B for “After Hours” and Favorite Song – Soul/R&B for “Heartless.”

  • Other multiple winners included:  Justin Bieber, who picked up three (thanks to two awards for his Dan + Shay collaboration “10,000 Hours); Dan + Shay, who also picked up three awards, and Doja Cat, BTS and Megan Thee Stallion, who each picked up two. Click here for a recap of last night's show.
